Perspective Drifts Like a Log on a River ( Book Review also on Huffpo<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Michael Keith\u2019s book Perspective Drifts Like a Log on a River<\/em> is a marvelous collection of exactly what the title suggests \u2013 perspectives.\u00a0 Keith is masterful at guiding his readers on unique journeys to places they would not visit on their own.\u00a0 It takes extraordinary imagination to forge the ironic, satirical, witty, probing and sensitive paths of this authorial treasure.<\/p>\n

Any writer or aspiring one could not help but smile after reading \u201cBlank Page\u201d in which Gerald \u201curgently\u201d wants to become a writer.\u00a0 He invests heavily in reaching his goal while living a fascinating life.\u00a0 But what does Gerald do?\u00a0 He concludes that he doesn\u2019t have material from which to draw inspiration even as it is before him each and every day.<\/p>\n

You might wonder while reading Keith\u2019s work if he finds all of us a little odd. \u00a0Surely he has met a \u201cBook Worm\u201d like the one who pretends to read massive tomes, even purchasing them to give to friends so they might consider him sophisticated.\u00a0 Keith has likely met (or perhaps is) the man who concludes his wife is mentally unsound because she disagrees with him in the perfectly titled \u201cHearing Problems.\u201d<\/p>\n

The author takes a jab at \u201cdumb humans\u201d who don\u2019t believe life exists elsewhere in the universe. \u00a0There are 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in the observable universe.\u00a0 So surely, Keith writes, someone somewhere can actually spell out that number.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no shortage of \u201cwhat-ifs.\u201d\u00a0 For example, the man who lives a good life only to learn from St. Gabriel that it was too good for entry into Heaven.\u00a0 Fortunately, most of us haven\u2019t crossed that line.\u00a0 But who even knew one existed?\u00a0 And what if you spent your life being a florist, loving flowers, only to be asked when it\u2019s too late: \u201cWhy do you insist on killing them?\u201d<\/p>\n

Keith takes one of several gender-difference forays in \u201cUpon Witnessing a Dialogue Between Aliens.\u201d\u00a0 Two female \u201cfriends\u201d disparage each other until their husbands must leave the room for fear of bloodshed.\u00a0 Not long after, the women emerge arm and arm wondering if anyone can understand how men think.<\/p>\n

One of my very favorites is also the title of the book.\u00a0 Perspective does drift like a log on a river.\u00a0 Dan Simmons, age 59, overcomes early adversity to achieve a \u201cbucolic existence\u201d with his loving wife and two adorable children. Yet, one day he finds himself plagued by feelings of remorse about his entire life.\u00a0 Had he lost everything or, like so many of us, simply lost perspective?<\/p>\n

This is a book about absurdities and contradictions that most of us let pass.\u00a0 Michael Keith opens our eyes to them.\u00a0 He toys with our expectations.\u00a0 Just when you think you have his perspective down, when you\u2019re sure the next insight will be at someone\u2019s expense, Keith tells us of Eugene Bickford whose wife welcomes him to the afterlife for another wonderful journey.<\/p>\n

Keith\u2019s book is also a wonderful journey.\u00a0 Whether you prefer novels, short stories, poems or vignettes, you will find delectable pleasure in the provocative Perspective Drifts Like a Log on a River<\/em>.<\/p>\n
